A pulse oximeter shines light through the fingertip to estimate how much oxygen the blood is carrying. Readings above 95% are typical for most healthy adults at rest, though what matters clinically is usually the change from your own baseline rather than the absolute figure.
Cold hands, dark nail polish and movement all interfere. Warm the hand, keep it still, and give it ten seconds to settle.
